Wayne Rooney: 'It was a difficult night'

Wayne Rooney admits that it was a difficult night to be involved in as England beat France on a night when tributes to the victims of the Paris attacks took centre stage.

Wayne Rooney has admitted that it was a difficult night for all involved as England claimed a 2-0 victory over France at Wembley.

Tributes were paid to the victims of the Paris attacks prior to the match as players came together on the pitch and supporters of both sides were encouraged to sing the French national anthem.

Goals from Dele Alli and Rooney clinched the win for the hosts, and the England captain was keen to reveal his pride at the response to the tragedy.

"It was always going to be a difficult night for everyone, especially the French players and staff," Rooney told ITV. "For ourselves to be involved in this occasion was tough, the young players were excited but it was a difficult game for them.

"I thought both teams handled it extremely well. The fans were brilliant.

"This will be shown round the world and will show unity. Football is a global game and, as Didier Deschamps said yesterday, it is not about religion or race. We need to stand tall together in these tough times."

Prince William and Prime Minister David Cameron attended the game, while the Wembley arch was lit up in French colours throughout the evening.
