Chris Smalling: 'Wayne Rooney will set a huge marker for England'

Chris Smalling backs Wayne Rooney to set a marker for England that will be "very hard to beat" in the future.

Chris Smalling has predicted that his Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney will go on to set a marker for England that will be "very hard to beat".

The striker became the Three Lions' all-time leading goalscorer by netting his 50th goal in Tuesday night's 2-0 victory over Switzerland at Wembley.

Sir Bobby Charlton had previously held the record with 49 goals, but Rooney edged ahead in the history books with an 84th-minute penalty in last night's Euro 2016 qualifier.

"He's got no sign of letting up," FourFourTwo quotes Smalling as saying. "I think when he finishes his career he's going to set a marker that's going to be very hard to beat."

After the match, Rooney admitted that it was a "dream come true" to reach the milestone.
