Alessandro Nesta: 'Italian football is falling behind'

Alessandro Nesta says that Italian football is struggling to compete financially with Europe's other leagues.

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has said that Serie A is falling behind Europe's other major football leagues.

The Montreal Impact centre-back believes that the Italian top flight is struggling to compete financially with the likes of La Liga and the Premier League.

"There's no money in Italy at the moment and the best players go to play in other leagues - Spain, England, Germany. Italy's going down," he told BBC Sport.

However, Nesta went on to say that Juventus's capture of striker Carlos Tevez from Manchester City is a big boost for Italian football.

"It's a very good signing. A player like Tevez, I didn't think would play in Serie A now. Juventus did a good job," he added.

Nesta spent a decade at AC Milan before leaving for Major League Soccer last year.
