Africa throws support behind Sheikh Salman for FIFA presidency

The Confederation of African Football throws its support behind Sheikh Salman, not Tokyo Sexwale, for the FIFA presidency.

The Confederation of African Football has announced that it will side with Sheikh Salman at the FIFA presidential election later this month.

The news announced by CAF means that Salman, who is president of the Asian Football Confederation, should be able to count on the votes of Africa's 54 federations when the presidential election takes place in Zurich on February 26.

Salman now has the backing of the AFC and CAF, while Italian Gianni Infantino has got the support of UEFA and CONMEBOL.

CAF's decision means that Tokyo Sexwale's chances of becoming FIFA president seem to be over after his own continent decided not to back him.

CONCACAF is yet to put its weight behind any candidate, although they will reportedly not wholly endorse one man as an organisation.
