Southend United boss Phil Brown hints that he will lead the team out in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy final against Crewe Alexandra at Wembley next month.

Newly-appointed Southend United boss Phil Brown has hinted that he will lead the team out at Wembley next month, despite suggestions that former boss Paul Sturrock would be allowed to return for the clash.

It was understood that Sturrock, who was sacked on Sunday, would lead the Blues out for their Johnstone's Paint Trophy final against Crewe Alexandra on April 7, but Brown has hinted that talks surrounding the issue have since taken place.

"I went round to see Paul and talk to him at length about it and, hopefully, we will come to the right decision, as we have a couple of important games this weekend and we have to put our best foot forward," he told Sky Sports News.

"To be brutally honest, it is a private conversation that myself, the chairman and Paul have had and we will announce whatever the result of that conversation is after this weekend."

Brown's first game in charge is against Bradford City on Friday.
