Everton boss Roberto Martinez takes Tottenham Hotspur rumour as a "compliment"

Everton manager Roberto Martinez describes rumours that Tottenham Hotspur want him as a "compliment".

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has described rumours that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in his services as a "compliment".

Reports emerged this week claiming that Spurs have placed Martinez at the top of their shortlist to replace Tim Sherwood.

The North London outfit are expected to dismiss Sherwood as head coach after he took over from Andre Villas-Boas in December.

It is believed that the Spurs hierarchy have been impressed with Martinez following his first season in charge at Everton, but the Toffees boss has given no suggestions that he is considering a move.

"Any speculation I take as a real football compliment," Martinez said in Friday's press conference. "This is the time you get rumours about the next moves. That means we have done something right.

"We have performed well and that affects players, staff and managers. We take it in a positive manner and carry on working hard."

Everton, who are fifth in the Premier League table, will take on Hull City at the KC Stadium in their final match of the campaign on Sunday.
