Nottingham Forest transfer news: Douglas Luiz emerges as potential January arrival?

Nottingham Forest are allegedly contemplating whether to make an approach for a former Premier League star during the January transfer window.

Nottingham Forest have reportedly identified Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz as a potential January signing.

During the summer, Juventus committed to paying €50m (£41.7m) to sign the Brazil international from Aston Villa, who needed to make a big-money sale to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability regulations.

However, the move is yet to pay off for Luiz who has been restricted to just two starts and 11 substitute appearances in all competitions.

As a result, speculation persists that Juventus could be prepared to part ways with the 26-year-old to free up funds to strengthen in other areas of the pitch.

Manchester City have been credited with an interest in the player, as have two other unnamed Premier League clubs, and it appears that Forest are ready to enter the race.

Nuno keen to bring Luiz back to Midlands?

According to Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto, who was commenting on X, Forest hold an interest in signing Luiz before the February 3 deadline.

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has guided Forest to second position in the Premier League table, putting them in a title race before they host leaders Liverpool next week.

Having posted six successive wins, there is an argument that Forest could get by without making any additions, particularly when they had to work hard to fulfil the PSR criteria during the summer.

Nevertheless, there is seemingly ambition to test Juventus' resolve, most likely through a straight loan proposal or with an option to buy.

While potential terms are not mentioned, Forest would theoretically need to break their transfer record (£35m for Elliot Anderson) in order to sign Luiz on a permanent basis.

Have Forest got enough midfielders?

Nuno already has five central midfielders at his disposal in Anderson, Ryan Yates, Nicolas Dominguez, James Ward-Prowse and Ibrahima Sangare.

Furthermore, that will become six once Danilo is deemed to have fully recovered from the broken ankle that he suffered on the opening day of the campaign.

A sale or loan exit would need to be facilitated to accommodate the arrival of Luiz, while the player himself may prefer to move to a bigger club than Forest or bide his time in Turin.

That said, Luiz was a star performer during his time at Aston Villa with 20 goals and 18 assists coming from his 175 appearances in the Premier League.
