Charlie Austin scores the only goal of the game as Southampton claim their first win of the Premier League campaign.

Southampton have claimed their first Premier League win of the season after battling to a 1-0 victory over Swansea City.

Charlie Austin scored the only goal at St Mary's just after the hour mark as Claude Puel took maximum points for the first time since taking charge of the Saints.

Shane Long almost broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 14th minute but Swans goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was able to parry his angled shot, while Dusan Tadic and Steven Davis both failed to put away the rebound.

The Saints continued to ask all of the questions and Fabianski was called into action again in the 19th minute, tipping a free kick from Tadic over the crossbar.

Early in the second half, Kyle Naughton was on hand to clear a Tadic shot off the line after Austin had played a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but they did not hold out for much longer.

With 63 minutes on the clock, Tadic played a menacing cross into the box, and Austin was given the time and space to control it inside the area before applying a composed finish.

The Saints remained on top into the closing stages but they had their goalkeeper Fraser Forster to thank for preserving the lead, as he pulled off a reaction save to keep out Gylfi Sigurdsson four minutes from the death.

The result moves Puel's side up to 14th in the league table, one place above Swansea.
