Uruguay receive Luis Suarez fitness boost ahead of World Cup opener

Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabarez insists that Luis Suarez is "responding well" following knee surgery.

Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabarez has suggested that Luis Suarez is winning his race to be fit for the World Cup following knee surgery.

The Liverpool striker was filmed sprinting and working on the ball during a training session in Brazil on Tuesday.

Suarez appeared to move freely during the session just three weeks after undergoing an operation to resolve damage to his knee.

Despite Suarez's return to training, it is unclear whether the prolific forward will return for Uruguay's opening Group D match against Costa Rica on Saturday.

"He's responding very well and his spirits couldn't be better," Sky Sports News quotes Tabarez as saying. "He's working full out on his physical fitness.

"As we have no set deadlines, I don't know if we'll have him for the first match, for the second, for the third. If it were up to me, Suarez would play tomorrow."

Suarez may face England in their second group match next Thursday.
