Europa League roundup: Wolfsburg, Zenit St Peterburg draw first blood

Wolfsburg and Zenit take a big step towards the last 16 of the Europa League with first-leg wins over Sporting Lisbon and PSV Eindhoven.

Wolfsburg took a big step toward the last 16 of the Europa League with a 2-0 first-leg win over Sporting Lisbon at the Volkswagen Arena tonight.

In-form hitman Bas Dost continued to enhance his reputation by scoring once in both halves to make it 10 goals in six games for the big Dutchman.

Zenit St Petersburg also boosted their hopes of a last-16 place by grabbing a precious away goal in a 1-0 victory at PSV Eindhoven.

Hulk broke the deadlock on 64 minutes as Andre Villas-Boas's side sit in pole position ahead of next week's second leg in Russia.

Elsewhere, Carlos Gurpegi struck a second-half equaliser as Athletic Bilbao held Torino to a 2-2 draw in Turin.

Inaki Williams had fired the Basque side ahead on nine minutes, but a first-half brace from Maxi Lopez completed the comeback for the Serie A side.

However, Gurpegi was on hand to head Benat Etxebarria's free kick home on 73 minutes to give the Spaniards a slender advantage in the tie.

The big winners on the night were Club Brugge, who beat Aalborg BK 3-1 at the Nordjyske Arena.

First-half goals from Mamadou Obbi Oulare and Lior Refaelov helped the Belgian side into a 2-0 half-time lead, before a Kenneth Petersen own goal on 61 minutes effectively sealed the result.

However, Aalborg threw themselves a lifeline in the tie when Nicklas Helenius converted a 71st-minute penalty to give the Danes a slim chance of progressing.

Results in full: Aalborg 1-3 Club Brugge, Dnipro 2-0 Olympiacos, PSV 0-1 Zenit, Torino 2-2 Athletic Bilbao, Wolfsburg 2-0 Sporting
