Nouha Dicko brace sends Wolverhampton Wanderers top

Nouha Dicko scores twice as Wolverhampton Wanderers move top of League One with a 3-0 victory over Port Vale at Molineux.

Nouha Dicko scored twice as Wolverhampton Wanderers moved top of League One with a 3-0 victory over Port Vale at Molineux today.

Bakary Sako opened the scoring in the second half before the 21-year-old made sure of the points with a double later in the encounter, as Wolves move ahead of Leyton Orient in the standings on goal difference.

Michael Jacobs, who has hit four goals in his last two games, displayed his new-found confidence early on by trying his luck from 25 yards, only to watch his effort fizz narrowly over the bar.

Wolves enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled in their bid to get beyond the Vale rearguard and should have gone behind midway through the half.

Micky Adams's men hit the hosts on the counter-attack following a stray pass from Jack Price but Doug Loft failed to finish off the swift move by blazing over from a good position.

Nevertheless, Kenny Jackett's troops recovered from the scare and went within the width of the crossbar from taking a half-time lead after Sam Ricketts thumped a header against the woodwork.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half through Sako, whose shot took a wicked deflection and deceived goalkeeper Chris Neal.

Dicko lashed home the second on 73 minutes after Ricketts's cross was blocked, before sealing the points two minutes later by latching on to a through-ball to fire home.

The French youngster had the chance to bag his hat-trick in the closing stages with a penalty, only to be denied by Neal.
