Leeds Rhinos return to top of Super League table

Leeds Rhinos go back to the top of the Super League table with an emphatic 58-26 victory at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Leeds Rhinos have returned to the top of the Super League table thanks to an emphatic 58-26 victory at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The hosts took an early lead through Tom Johnstone's converted try, but the Rhinos ran riot after that, scoring three tries within 17 minutes.

Liam Sutcliffe was the first to touch down, while Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow both went over in quick succession soon after. Wakefield replied with a Pita Godinet score before Carl Ablett extended Leeds' advantage with a minute left in the first half.

Kevin Sinfield kicked over a total of eight points for the visitors during the opening 40 minutes as they went in 24-10 up at the interval.

Leeds turned the screw in the second half as an additional seven tries saw them ease to victory.

Sutcliffe completed his hat-trick by scoring twice, with Ash Handley and Brad Singleton also getting in on the act by touching down twice each. Jimmy Keinhorst added his name to the list of Leeds try-scorers before Wakefield mounted a minor fightback during the final stages.

Danny Kirmond, Nick Scruton and Johnstone all went over inside the final 10 minutes, though their tries were not enough to stop the Wildcats from suffering a 14th consecutive defeat in the competition.
