Dutch speed skating coach Jillert Anema believes that the USA is obsessed with "foolish sports".
The American speed skaters have struggled at the ongoing 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, having won just one medal (silver) in short track and none in the long-track events.
"You have a lot of attention for foolish sports, like American football," Anema told CNBC on Friday. "You waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, in a sport where it's meant to kill each other, to injure each other.
"[The US] is so narrow-minded, and you waste a lot of good talent in a sport that sucks. When you compete once every four years, with talent, with a few lone wolves who are skating, you can't beat the world. It's no way.
"I think that the gold medal in speed skating is just as valuable as the gold medal in basketball, and we won 22. You'll never win 22 in basketball."
The Netherlands have won 22 medals in Sochi so far, while the US have clinched 27.
