New Year's Day's League Two predictions including Notts County vs. Walsall

Sports Mole provides score predictions and previews for all of today's League Two fixtures, including Notts County vs. Walsall.

Accrington vs. Grimsby Town (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Relegation-threatened Accrington Stanley are set to host promotion-chasing Grimsby Town at Wham Stadium on New Year's Day in League Two.

The hosts are without a league win since early November, while the visitors will be full of confidence and looking to make it three victories in a row on Wednesday.

We say: Accrington Stanley 0-2 Grimsby Town

Accrington have been struggling since their loss in the reverse fixture, and are not likely to fare any better on Wednesday.

Grimsby will be keen to keep up with the pack of clubs fighting for the automatic promotion spot behind Walsall, and it is difficult to picture anything other than a routine win for the visitors on New Year's Day.

Barrow vs. Bradford (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Stephen Clemence's Barrow are set to host Graham Alexander's promotion hopefuls Bradford City at SO Legal Stadium on New Year's Day in League Two.

The Bluebirds come into the game without a win in their last two, while the Bantams will be looking to record their third consecutive victory on Wednesday.

We say: Barrow 1-1 Bradford City

Barrow's poor winning record makes it difficult to imagine the hosts earning victory on Wednesday, and their goalscoring record means it is unlikely they will score more than once.

However, the Bluebirds have proven themselves capable of grinding out draws in the league, including against the Bantams in early December, so expect another low-scoring stalemate on New Year's Day.

Chesterfield vs. MK Dons (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to put consecutive League Two away defeats behind them, Chesterfield return to the Technique Stadium on New Year's Day, keen to get the better of fellow promotion hopefuls MK Dons in gameweek 24.

Paul Cook's side lost back-to-back fixtures to close out 2024 and are motivated to return to winning ways to possibly return to the league's top seven places after Wednesday's encounter, at the expense of an opponent winless in four matches.

We say: Chesterfield 2-1 MK Dons

Having failed to keep an away clean sheet all season, that pattern should continue for MK Dons on Wednesday, with Chesterfield backed to notch a fourth straight League Two success in front of their supporters.

Crewe vs. Carlisle (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Although separated by 16 places in the League Two table, Crewe Alexandra and Carlisle United head into Wednesday's gameweek 24 fixture at the Mornflake Stadium with two wins combined in 14 games.

The promotion-chasing side's last win came in mid-December, while second-bottom Carlisle ended 2024 with a 2-1 success over Accrington Stanley to snap a six-match winless streak.

We say: Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Carlisle United

Crewe have stayed undefeated on home soil since losing 5-0 to Chesterfield on August 17, although they have been held to four draws in the subsequent nine matches, including the previous two against Bradford City (1-1) and Colchester United (0-0).

Despite their propensity for the odd stalemate, Bell's side should eke out a marginal win over second-bottom Carlisle.

Doncaster vs. Fleetwood (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Out-of-form Doncaster Rovers return to League Two action on New Year's Day, keen to get the better of Fleetwood Town in the gameweek 24 clash at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Rovers, third in the standings at the time of writing, could be displaced from the top seven spots altogether if they lose, but they hope to avoid that outcome against an opponent that finished 2024 strongly — claiming four points from six to close out the year under new boss Pete Wild.

We say: Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Fleetwood Town

Doncaster have won just one of their previous seven matches on home soil, while Fleetwood have failed to win on the road since October 1.

Given that precedent and the seeming bounce after Wild's appointment in Lancashire, the spoils could be shared in South Yorkshire on New Year's Day.

Harrogate vs. Salford City (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Harrogate Town are in freefall heading into gameweek 24's New Year's Day League Two encounter with in-form Salford City at the EnviroVent Stadium.

Both sides are at opposite ends of the form table, with Harrogate bottom and Salford second, highlighting their respective patterns before Wednesday's fixture.

We say: Harrogate Town 0-2 Salford City

Salford enter January 1 in fine form, and they should expect to secure a fifth straight league victory against out-of-form Harrogate, who have failed to score in consecutive fixtures in front of their supporters.

Morecambe vs. Tranmere (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

League Two's bottom side, Morecambe, will host Tranmere Rovers, a team aiming to put more distance between themselves and the relegation zone, at Globe Arena on New Year's Day.

The hosts have amassed 17 points from 23 matches, leaving them two points adrift of safety, while the visitors hold 22 points from 21 matches, sitting three points clear of the drop zone.

We say: Morecambe 1-1 Tranmere Rovers

This is a contest between the league's poorest home side and the worst away team in the division – however, Tranmere have demonstrated an ability to grind out results on the road, which is why we are predicting they will secure at least a point in this encounter.

Notts County vs. Walsall (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

The top two teams in League Two will face off on New Year's Day when Notts County welcome Walsall to Meadow Lane on Wednesday evening.

The visitors, who are top of the summit, are 12 points ahead of the hosts, who currently sit in second place with 37 points thanks to a superior goal difference over Doncaster Rovers, Port Vale and Grimsby Town who occupy the next three spots.

We say: Notts County 1-2 Walsall

Two solid defences will collide, but we believe Notts County's backline is more likely to be breached multiple times, given Walsall boast the league's best attack, leading us to predict a narrow victory for the visitors.

Port Vale vs. Cheltenham (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Port Vale can end a lengthy League Two winless run on Wednesday as they begin 2025 by welcoming Cheltenham Town to Vale Park.

A 3-0 defeat to Grimsby Town last weekend dropped the Valiants down to fourth in the table, while Cheltenham are 14th following a 5-3 loss versus Notts County.

We say: Port Vale 3-2 Cheltenham Town

A new year is approaching, and we expect to see Port Vale turn over a new leaf and find their goalscoring form on Wednesday against a side that conceded multiple goals three times last month.

Swindon vs. Colchester (Wednesday, 3.00pm)

Swindon Town will try to put some distance between themselves and the League Two relegation zone as they begin 2025 by hosting Colchester United at The Nigel Eady County Ground on Wednesday.

Both sides earned come-from-behind 1-1 draws over the weekend, with the Robins claiming a point at Bromley and Colchester doing the same versus Doncaster Rovers.

We say: Swindon Town 2-2 Colchester United

At least three or more goals have been scored the last four times these teams have met in a competitive fixture, and we expect another strong attacking display for each on Wednesday, but no one finding that decisive advantage.
