Arsene Wenger: 'European competition will replace domestic games on weekends'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that European competition will go on to take the place of domestic league fixtures on weekends.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that European competition will go on to replace the Premier League on weekends.

The Champions League final has taken place on a Saturday since 2010, but on the whole, European football has been limited to weekdays.

Wenger, who will step down from his 22-year Gunners tenure at the end of the season, believes that the Champions League and Europa League will encroach more on domestic leagues in the coming years.

"The next evolution? Maybe I will see you in a few years and you will certainly have a European league over the weekends," Wenger told reporters at his final Arsenal press conference.

"A domestic league will certainly play Tuesday, Wednesday. I think that is the next step we will see."

This year's Champions League final, between Real Madrid and Liverpool, takes place on Saturday, May 26.
