So, with three games to spare, a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace secured Chelsea a first Premier League title in five years.
It's the race for second spot that is now in full swing, with both Manchester City and Arsenal recording away victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City respectively.
Manchester United lost ground, though, thanks to a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion, which leaves them in a battle for fourth place with rivals Liverpool, who edged out Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Anfield.
Towards the bottom, there were important wins for Aston Villa, Sunderland and Leicester City, but Burnley looked doomed to relegation following their 1-0 loss away at West Ham United.
Meanwhile, in the battle for eighth, Swansea City came out on top 2-0 over Stoke City at the Liberty Stadium.

Boaz Myhill (West Bromwich Albion)
In the second half at Old Trafford, Myhill was peppered with shots, but he stood firm. The undoubted highlight of his display was the penalty save from Robin van Persie.
Jeffrey Schlupp (Leicester City)
Having shaken off an injury to play, Schlupp consistently bombed down the left flank from his wing-back role. His pace and tenacity caused plenty of problems for Newcastle.
Jores Okore (Aston Villa)
Romelu Lukaku's physical attributes make him a difficult player to contend with at times, but the Villa centre-back made light work of it.
John Terry (Chelsea)
The champions didn't have it all their own way at home to Palace, but when the visitors did get some joy in the final third, they were often thwarted by the evergreen Terry.
Marc Albrighton (Leicester City)
Like his teammate Schlupp on the opposite side of the pitch, Albrighton got forward well, while never neglecting his defensive duties.
Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)
Not for the first time this season, Coutinho was Liverpool's best player at Anfield. His performance was rounded off by yet another impressive goal.
Fabian Delph (Aston Villa)
If Delph keeps performing like this, Villa are going to struggle to keep hold of him. He bossed the midfield battle against Everton and also showed good creativity with his left foot.
Jordi Gomez (Sunderland)
In a relegation battle you need composure. Gomez showed that by scoring twice from the penalty spot, as well as being neat and tidy in possession of the ball.
Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)
What a first season in England it's been for the speedy Chilean. He took his tally for the campaign to 24 goals by bagging a brace at the KC Stadium.
Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)
Although he often found himself isolated at White Hart Lane, the Argentine was a nuisance to the Spurs rearguard. The finish for his goal showed just how sharp of a striker he is.
Christian Benteke (Aston Villa)
It's now 11 goals in nine games for Benteke, who caused no end of problems for the Everton centre-backs. On this form, there are few more effective strikers in the Premier League.
Numpty of the week
Mike Williamson: Whether he deliberately got himself sent off or not, there can be no defending Williamson's actions. Already on a booking, the Newcastle centre-back inexplicably wiped out Jamie Vardy, despite the fact that he, the Leicester striker and the ball were all off the pitch. He's also lucky that he did not cause Vardy a serious injury.
Goal of the week
Philippe Coutinho - (Liverpool) vs. QPR: The Brazilian playmaker has scored some memorable goals this term and this was another to add to his collection. Having been picked out inside the box by Rickie Lambert, Coutinho used the defender in front of him as a shield as he smartly curled his shot into the far corner of the net.
