Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar reportedly still wants to complete a move to Arsenal, in spite of their attempts to sign Leicester City's James Maddison.

Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar is reportedly still keen to complete a move to Arsenal, in spite of the Gunners' interest in James Maddison.

Mikel Arteta's side are expected to bring another creative midfielder to the club before the transfer window closes, but their pursuit of Martin Odegaard is not expected to bear fruit.

With reports last month claiming that Arsenal had ended their interest in Aouar given their reluctance to pay Lyon's €25m (£21.3m) asking price, James Maddison is now rumoured to be the Gunners' number one target.

Leicester City supposedly knocked back a player-plus-cash offer from Arsenal for Maddison, but The Sun claims that Aouar is still hopeful that the Gunners will come knocking.

The report adds that Aouar's entourage have been left 'stunned' by Arsenal's attempts to sign Maddison, and they are hoping that Arteta's side will fail in their bid to lure him away from Leicester and reignite their interest in Aouar.

The 23-year-old scored seven goals and set up three more in 30 Ligue 1 games for Lyon last term, and he now has less than two years left to run on his deal with Les Gones.
