Alex McLeish backs Birmingham City to beat Aston Villa

McLeish backs Birmingham to beat Villa
Alex McLeish suggests that Birmingham City have what it takes to defeat arch rivals Aston Villa in the League Cup this evening.

Alex McLeish has stated that Birmingham City are capable of upsetting the odds and beating arch rivals Aston Villa in the League Cup this evening.

The two sides will meet at Villa Park in the third round of the competition, with Villa winning just one of their opening six Premier League games, while the visitors have lost just once in the Championship this season.

McLeish, who managed both clubs, has said that pressure is on Tim Sherwood and his Villa side as they go up against Gary Rowett's Blues.

"Tim has to get the Aston Villa show back on track. When he came in, he was a breath of fresh air and it is absolutely vital he wins this one tonight," McLeish told talkSPORT.

"But Gary Rowett looks relaxed. He has put a bit of pressure on Villa saying they are fourth from bottom in the Premier League.

"All these little things niggle and get under your skin and I'm sure the Blues will put up a very good fight. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a shock."

McLeish lifted the League Cup with Birmingham in 2011 before spending the following season in charge of Villa.
