Barcelona vs. Benfica: Head-to-head record and past meetings ahead of Champions League clash

Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between Barcelona and Benfica ahead of Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg.

Less than a week after they faced off in Lisbon, Barcelona and Benfica will recommence battle when they lock horns in Tuesday's Champions League last-16 second leg at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.

Barcelona will head into the return fixture with a slender advantage after recording a 1-0 victory at the Estadio da Luz, despite playing the majority of the contest with 10 men following Pau Cubarsi's early red card.

A Raphinha goal combined with Wojciech Szczesny's heroic performance ensured Hansi Flick's side left the Portuguese capital with a precious victory.

The Catalan giants have not played since the first leg after Saturday's La Liga fixture against Osasuna was postponed following the death of the club's first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia.

Benfica will travel to Barcelona on the back of a win, with goals from Zeki Amdouni, Orkun Kokcu and Vangelis Pavlidis firing them to a 3-0 victory in Saturday's league game against Nacional.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 11
Benfica wins: 2
Draws: 4
Barcelona wins: 5

Barcelona have tackled Benfica on 11 occasions throughout history, with the Catalan outfit leading the overall head-to-head record five wins to two, while there have also been four draws.

Their first-ever meeting remains their most famous, with the pair locking horns in the final of the 1961 European Cup, and Benfica lifted the trophy for the first time courtesy of a 3-2 success over Barcelona.

Seven of their next eight meetings took place in the group stage of either the European Cup or Champions League, while they also locked horns in the quarter-finals of the 2005-06 tournament.

The first leg of their last-eight meeting finished 0-0 in Portugal, before Barcelona secured their spot in the semi-finals of the tournament courtesy of a 2-0 success on home soil.

The two sides were involved in an exhilarating affair in January 2025, as Barcelona recorded a 5-4 victory over Benfica, scoring two late goals to record a stunning win in the league phase of the Champions League.

The Blaugrana enjoyed another successful trip to Lisbon less than two months later, recording a narrow 1-0 victory to establish a first-leg lead in their Champions League last-16 tie despite playing around 70 minutes with 10 men.

Raphinha scored the decisive goal in that first-leg encounter, taking him level with Pavlidis on three goals as the leading scorers in this fixture.
