Arda Turan applied pressure early on for the visitors, looking to test the Barcelona defence inside the opening couple of minutes, but Gerard Pique was able to block his progress.

Lionel Messi had a chance to open the scoring from a free kick just outside the box, but the Argentine could only hit the wall.

Messi tried to create an opportunity for Andres Iniesta later in the half, but he was unable to get past Diego Godin, while Neymar was denied a penalty after going down under pressure from the defender.

Barcelona continued to look strong at the start of the second half, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock when Diego picked out the top corner with a strike from outside the box, silencing the home supporters.

Cesc Fabregas tried to get the hosts back on level terms, testing Thibaut Courtois from close range, but he had also been flagged for offside.

However, Neymar was able to find the target shortly after, collecting a through-ball from Iniesta before curling the ball past the Atletico keeper.

Messi came close to putting Barcelona ahead late on as he tried to curl a free kick in inside the final five minutes, but Courtois made the save.
