Barcelona reportedly failed with a late January bid of up to €50m (£44.7m) for Borussia Monchengladbach striker Alassane Plea.

Barcelona reportedly failed with an approach for Borussia Monchengladbach striker Alassane Plea during the January transfer window.

The Spanish champions were in the market for attacking reinforcements following long-term injuries to Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele, eventually being forced to bring in Martin Braithwaite from Leganes on an emergency deal.

A plethora of players had been linked to Barcelona, and German outlet Bild now claims that Monchengladbach striker Plea was also the subject of an approach.

The 27-year-old has scored eight goals and created seven in 22 Bundesliga appearances this season, helping Gladbach into a top-four spot before play was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Barcelona were reportedly willing to pay up to €50m (£44.7m) for the Frenchman's services in January, but their offer was knocked back by Gladbach director Max Eberl due to Plea being considered integral to their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The Bundesliga outfit were also concerned that they would not be left with enough time to source a replacement before the end of the window.
