Barnsley manager David Flitcroft says that the club's players have 'overachieved' by giving themselves a chance of Championship survival.

Barnsley manager David Flitcroft has said that the club's players have 'overachieved' by giving themselves a chance of securing Championship survival.

Flitcroft has won nine of his 19 league games in charge of the Tykes, which leaves the club in the relegation zone on goal difference behind Peterborough United.

The Oakwell outfit were bottom of the table when Flitcroft replaced the sacked Keith Hill as manager in January.

"I'm delighted to be in this position and that the lads have given themselves a shot. We've overachieved," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I've always been positive but I never thought it would take 54 points to get to this point. I was more looking at a target of 48 when I took over.

"If we go down then we will have gone down fighting. We're desperate to stay in this league."

Barnsley travel to Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
