Manuel Neuer saves a penalty as Bayern Munich head into the break on level terms with Schalke 04 after a Jerome Boateng red card in a goalless first half.

A penalty save from Manuel Neuer has kept Bayern Munich on level terms with Schalke 04 after a goalless first half which saw Jerome Boateng sent off for the hosts.

It was a confident start from the Bundesliga champions, and they could have been ahead in the first five minutes had Bastian Schweinsteiger not sent a header just wide of the post after meeting a corner.

After dominating possession throughout the early stages, Bayern were dealt a blow when Boateng was shown a straight red card for pulling down Sidney Sam in the box.

However, Neuer came to the rescue for the hosts by guessing correctly to stop a weak penalty from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Boateng's dismissal forced Pep Guardiola to respond by replacing Mario Gotze with Dante, and the home supporters were given another scare when Choupo-Moting tested Neuer with a long-range strike.

Bayern continued to look comfortable in possession with a man fewer than their rivals, and Arjen Robben came close to opening the scoring before the break when he cut onto his left foot to curl an effort just past the post.
