Nottingham Forest secure an unexpected but vital three points against Birmingham City at St Andrews.

Nottingham Forest pulled off a major shock in the Championship this afternoon by beating promotion hopefuls Birmingham City 2-1 at St Andrews.

Birmingham began the match looking like the better side, dominating the first half an hour so or so. However, it was the away side who took the lead against the run of play.

Garath McCleary picked up the ball from Marcus Tudgay before swinging a cross into Dexter Blackstock, who slid in to give Forest the lead.

Both sides traded chances before half time, Adlene Guedioura firing just wide for the visitors while Andy Reid squandered a chance to level the sides by blasting his shot over the crossbar.

Birmingham finally got their equaliser ten minutes into the second half when Marlon King did well to cut the ball back, finding Chris Burke who duly curled the ball past Lee Camp.

They were only level for eight minutes, however, as a defensive mix-up between Steven Caldwell and Curtis Davies allowed Blackstock to net his and Forest's second of the game.

Birmingham were unable to find an equaliser to avoid the shock defeat, meaning that they drop to fifth in the Championship while Forest move up to 20th.
