Birmingham put four past Millwall

Two goals in each half give Birmingham City a comfortable win over Millwall at St Andrew's.

Birmingham City have completed a 4-0 thrashing of Millwall at St Andrew's in the Championship this evening.

The home side had the chance to take the lead early on after Jesse Lingard was brought down in the box, giving the on-loan Manchester United man a chance from the penalty spot, but his effort was saved by David Forde.

Birmingham continued to apply pressure and broke the deadlock in the 19th minute as David Murphy tapped in from close range following an Andrew Shinnie free kick.

Murphy was on the score sheet again before half time, drilling the ball past Forde from a free kick less than a minute after the Millwall keeper stopped a Chris Burke shot.

The visitors won a free kick just outside the box early on in the second half, but Martyn Waghorn's low effort was just held by Darren Randolph.

The hosts were able to extend their lead with just over 20 minutes left to play, as Lee Martin curled the ball in for Tom Adeyemi to smash it in from his first touch.

A chance for a fourth followed five minutes later, but Forde was able to force Nikola Zigic's header wide.

Murphy had the opportunity to complete his hat-trick late on, but the defender saw his finish saved by Forde, before he was substituted.

However, Birmingham did add to their score late on, as Lingard made up for his earlier miss from the spot with a header from close range.
