Huddersfield Town embarrassed by Bournemouth on opening day

Bournemouth get their season off to a flyer with a 4-0 win away at Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town's Championship season began in disastrous fashion as they lost 4-0 at home to Bournemouth this afternoon.

Bournemouth opened the scoring just 26 seconds into their season when Marc Pugh found himself in acres of space in the box, and the winger took a touch out of his feet before finishing calmly.

The goal seemed to give the visitors confidence, and Pugh continued to cause problems while Matt Ritchie twice went close. First, his shot on the turn was well saved by Alex Smithies, then he saw another shot bend just wide of the far post.

Callum Wilson, who threatened in behind the Huddersfield defence for the entirety of the first 45 minutes, then latched on to a through-ball and finished smartly to double Bournemouth's lead.

Oliver Norwood came the closest to reducing the deficit when he rattled the crossbar, but Bournemouth held on to their two-goal lead at the break.

Five minutes after the restart, Yann Kermorgant put the result beyond any doubt when he tapped home after Smithies had palmed away Pugh's initial effort.

Wilson grabbed his second goal of the afternoon in the 64th minute when he poked in Ritchie's cross from the right flank, but spurned the opportunity of a debut hat-trick from the spot as Smithies pushed away his feeble 12-yard effort.
