Preview: Bradford City vs. Carlisle United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League Two clash between Bradford City and Carlisle United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Bradford City and Carlisle United draw the curtain on their 2021-2022 League Two campaign when they square off at the Bradford City Ticket Office on Saturday.

The visitors will head into the game seeking to complete a second consecutive league double over the Bantams, having won each of the last three meetings between the sides.

Bradford City picked up a second consecutive league victory for the first time since March when they comfortably edged out Sutton United 4-1 at the Gander Green Lane last Saturday.

After Alistair Smith struck a 55th-minute equaliser to cancel out Charles Vernam's opener, Vernam added his second of the game in the 77th minute before Yann Songo'o and Andy Cook scored in the dying stages of the game to cap off a brilliant team display.

Prior to that, Jamie Walker and Verman scored first-half goals to hand the Bantams a 2-1 victory over Scunthorpe United on April 23 which saw their six-game winless run come to an end.

With 55 points from 45 games, Bradford City are currently 14th in the League Two standings, two points and four places above Saturday's visitors.

While Mark Hughes's side will look to make it three wins from three and close out their season on a high, next up is an opposing side who have won each of the last three meetings between the teams and are unbeaten since a 3-1 loss back in September 2019.

Elsewhere, Carlisle United returned to winning ways last time out as they saw off Stevenage 2-1 when the sides squared off at the Brunton Park Stadium.

Following an uneventful first half, Joe Riley and Lewis Alessandra struck 18 minutes into the second half to put the hosts ahead before Luke Norris pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

Paul Simpson's side have now won two of their last three league outings, with a 3-0 defeat against Harrogate Town at the CNG Stadium on April 23 being the only exception.

Carlisle United head into the weekend winless in each of their last four games on the road, picking up one point from a possible 12 since a 2-1 win at Barrow on March 19.

Team News

Bradford City remain without the services of 31-year-old forward Tom Elliott, who has been out of action since coming off injured against Harrogate Town back in February.

He is joined on the Bantams' injury table by fellow forward Abo Eisa after the 26-year-old sustained a severe injury last November.

With his brace against Sutton United last time out, Vernam now has four goal involvements in his last two games and the midfielder will be one to keep an eye out for.

Carlisle United's injury list is more hefty by comparison as the likes of Joel Senior, Jamie Devitt and Callum Guy have all been sidelined through injuries.

English forward Tobi Sho-Silva is set to sit out his third game on the bounce after picking up an injury in the game against Mansfield Town on April 18.

Fellow countryman Joe Riley is also a doubt for the Blues after the 25-year-old midfielder was forced off injured in the 57th minute against Stevenage last time out.

Bradford City possible starting lineup:
Bass; Ridehalgh, O'Connor, Songo'o, Hendrie; Watt, Gilliead; Vernam, Walker, Pereira; Angol

Carlisle United possible starting lineup:
Howard; Ellis, Whelan, Feeney, Mellish, Armer; Gibson, Alessandra, Dickenson; Patrick, Dennis

We say: Bradford City 2-1 Carlisle United

Following an underwhelming campaign, both sides will be looking to close out the season with successive victories. The Bantams head into the game as the more in-form side and we are tipping them to come away with a narrow victory.
