Brechin City comfortably beat East Fife

Brechin City sweep aside East Fife to keep in touch with the Scottish League One playoff places.

Brechin City did their hopes of gaining promotion to the Scottish Championship via the playoffs no harm as they made light work of beating struggling East Fife this afternoon.

Bobby Barr put the Hedgemen into the lead just before the half-hour mark when the forward rifled his shot from the heart of the area beyond the grasp of Greg Paterson.

City doubled their lead just before the break after Andy Jackson latched onto Steven Robb's cross before tucking the ball home to delight of the Glebe Park crowd.

Brechin put the game beyond doubt with little more than an hour played when Jackson turned provider for Robert Thomson, whose long-range effort was too good for Jackson in the East Fife goal.

The visitors tried to muster a response, but their best efforts from Liam Buchanan and Ryan Stewart were in vain as the Angus club held on for the three points.

The result means Brechin are within four points of the League One playoff positions, but they have played more games than all the teams ahead of them in the division.

Meanwhile, the Fifers stay just six points ahead of Arbroath and Airdrieonians in ninth and 10th respectively, but have a worse goal difference.
