Preview: Peterborough United vs. Bristol City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Peterborough United and Bristol City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Peterborough United play host to Bristol City on Saturday afternoon looking for the victory which could move the club outside of the Championship relegation zone.

Meanwhile, the visitors have dropped back down to 10th position after seeing their five-match unbeaten streak come to an end in midweek.

Match preview

Peterborough have been somewhat of a disappointment since returning to the Championship, Posh losing each of their five away fixtures and conceding 16 goals in the process.

However, it has been a different story at their home ground, eight points being collected from the same amount of fixtures with their only defeat coming in the last minute against West Bromwich Albion.

Darren Ferguson will be frustrated that his side currently occupy a place in the bottom three, but he will acknowledge that they have done well to remain in close proximity to 21st place.

Aside from a seven-minute capitulation at Coventry City, Peterborough have been much improved at the back, keeping clean sheets against Birmingham City and Bournemouth.

While they rode their luck against the Cherries in midweek, a share of the spoils means that they have the momentum ahead of their meeting with Bristol City.

The visitors will continue to have to make do without manager Nigel Pearson, who remains in isolation after testing positive for coronavirus earlier this week.

There is an argument that his absence was a factor as the Robins went down 1-0 to Millwall in midweek, ending a run of nine points from five matches.

Although Bristol City only lost out to a second-half penalty, it extended their run of conceding within 20 minutes of the restart to three games.

That trend will not be lost on Pearson, decisive goals also being shipped in added-on time on more than one occasion since the start of the campaign.

However, with just six goals being scored in seven outings at the other end, Pearson will feel that such occurrences could have been avoided had his team performed better in the final third.

Team News

Ferguson may decide to stick with the Peterborough team which started the draw with Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

However, Conor Coventry, Joe Ward and Sammie Szmodics are all in contention for a recall after they were introduced as substitutes for the final quarter.

Jonson Clarke-Harris remains available for selection while Peterborough appeal his four-man ban for historical social media posts.

With Nathan Baker sustaining another injury in midweek, Cameron Pring could slot in on the left-hand side of the Bristol City defence.

Callum O'Dowda and Kasey Palmer are both pushing for starts, while Nahki Wells could get the nod ahead of either Chris Martin or Andreas Weimann.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Cornell; Thompson, Edwards, Kent, Butler; Burrows, Norburn, Taylor, Dembele; Grant; Clarke-Harris

Bristol City possible starting lineup:
Bentley; Kalas, Atkinson, Pring; Tanner, James, Bakinson, Dasilva; O'Dowda, Martin, Weimann

We say: Peterborough United 2-1 Bristol City

Peterborough are starting to build some momentum, particularly at their home ground. Despite the Robins performing better away from Ashton Gate, that is not enough for us to back against a narrow win for Posh after a competitive tussle.
