Preview: Cadiz vs. Las Palmas - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's La Liga clash between Cadiz and Las Palmas, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Cadiz will attempt to send their survival fight to the final day of the season when they play host to Las Palmas in Sunday's La Liga contest.

The Andalusian side are languishing in 18th position and four points adrift from safety, while the 14th-placed visitors enjoy a six-point cushion over their opponents.

After claiming a narrow 1-0 win over Getafe, Cadiz left it late to clinch another crucial victory in Tuesday's away clash with Sevilla.

Sergi Guardiola scored a 96th-minute winner to seal the club's first away league win of the season and back-to-back La Liga wins for the first time since May 2021.

Unfortunately for Mauricio Pellegrino's side, their relegation rivals all picked up points on matchday 36, with Celta Vigo and Rayo Vallecano both winning while Mallorca and Las Palmas took a point from their respective games against Osasuna and Real Betis.

As a result, the Andalusian club will enter Sunday's contest knowing that they need to collect a third consecutive win to send their survival fight to the final matchday of the season.

A defeat would see them join Almeria and Granada in the second tier, while a draw would all but end their four-year stay in the top flight.

With Cadiz looking for inspiration, they may be able to take some encouragement from the fact that they have won three of their previous five home matches.

At one stage of the season, Las Palmas looked as though they would finish closer to the European places than the bottom three in their first La Liga campaign since 2017-18.

However, Garcia Pimienta's side have experienced a significant drop-off in the last few months, collecting just three points in 12 matches.

Las Palmas are still searching for their first win since February 10, but they did at least show great character to end an eight-game losing run in Thursday's home clash against Betis.

Alex Suarez and Alberto Moleiro both got on the scoresheet to help Las Palmas come from behind on two occasions to clinch their first home point in nearly three months.

For all their recent struggles, Las Palmas will achieve their main objective of survival if they avoid defeat against Cadiz, but a loss would set up a nervy final-day fixture against Alaves.

Picking up a point may be the visitors' best hope as they have failed to win any of their previous seven competitive meetings with Cadiz (D3, L4) since they recorded a 2-1 win in the Copa del Rey in September 2009.

Team News

Cadiz players celebrate after Juanmi scores their second goal on March 9, 2024© Reuters

Cadiz remain without Luis Hernandez, Jorge Mere, Fede San Emeterio, Rominigue Kouame and Jose Mari, while Aiham Ousou and Ivan Alejo are both doubts.

Experienced forward Juanmi is pushing for a starting berth after making three consecutive substitute appearances.

Thursday's match-winner Guardiola may have to settle for a place on the bench, but he could still have a role to play if Cadiz are in need of a goal in the second period.

Meanwhile, Las Palmas defender Daley Sinkgraven is a doubt after missing the last two matches with a hamstring problem.

Barcelona loanee Julian Araujo is available for selection, having served his one-match suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards.

After having just two full days to recover from Thursday's match, Pimienta could be tempted to freshen up the midfield with the introduction of Javi Munoz.

Cadiz possible starting lineup:
Ledesma; Zaldua, Fali, Chust, Hernandez; Navarro, Escalante, Alcaraz, Sobrino; Ramos, Juanmi

Las Palmas possible starting lineup:
Valles; Suarez, Coco, Marmol, Cardona; Munoz, Loiodice, Rodriguez; Park, Moleiro, Ramirez

We say: Cadiz 2-0 Las Palmas

The pressure will be on Cadiz due to their perilous position, but the Andalusian club have risen to the occasion in the last two matches, and we think that they will produce another strong performance to claim a crucial win against an out-of-form Las Palmas side.
