Las Palmas grab vital goals to beat Celta Vigo in tight first-leg clash

Goals from Hernan and Marcelo Silva give Las Palmas a slender 2-1 first-leg victory over Celta Vigo in the last-32 round of the Copa del Rey.

Las Palmas will take an important goal's lead into the second leg of their last-32 Copa del Rey tie against Celta Vigo, after they earned a 2-1 home victory over Eduardo Berizzo's men this evening.

It was the hosts who created the game's first goal-scoring opportunity when Christian Fernandez leapt highest to meet Guzman's cross into the box, but he could only head wide from close range.

Despite sharing much of the possession in the early period, Celta Vigo found themselves behind in the 23rd minute after Hernan reacted best to Guzman's set piece, with the Las Palmas man making no mistake with a finish into the top-right corner.

As the half-time whistle neared visiting Vigo thought they had found a route back into the contest, only for Augusto Fernandez to be denied at the bottom corner by Palmas goalkeeper Raul Lizoain.

The hosts had the chance to earn an even more promising advantage in the tie when Sergi Gomez brought down Hernan inside the box, only for Juan Emmanuel Culio to send his spot kick crashing onto the crossbar.

It seemed like the miss wasn't to matter too much, though, as Marcelo Silva showed his strength to latch on to Emmanuel Culio's corner and head Las Palmas into a two-goal lead with 11 minutes to play.

Despite the shock, Vigo hadn't quite given up the fight and they eventually found their way back into the tie when Santi Mina converted a penalty to make it 2-1, after Raul Lizoain had brought down Fabian Orellana inside the box.
