Paul Scholes backs "warrior" Patrice Evra to handle Lionel Messi

Juventus left-back Patrice Evra has the know-how to stop Barcelona's Lionel Messi in the upcoming Champions League final, says Paul Scholes.

Paul Scholes has backed former Manchester United teammate Patrice Evra to combat Lionel Messi in Juventus' Champions League final clash with Barcelona on Saturday.

Berlin plays host as both sides travel to the Olympiastadion hoping to complete a treble, after the duo dominated their respective domestic league and cups this season.

All eyes will be on the Catalans' formidable triumvirate of Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, who have scored a combined 120 goals this season.

The contest will be Evra's fifth Champions League final following spells with United and Monaco, and Scholes backs the "warrior" to hold his own against the Argentine superstar.

"My old teammate Patrice Evra is playing his fifth Champions League final tomorrow, a great achievement," Scholes wrote in his column for the Evening Standard.

"Pat is a warrior and a strong character who you want on your side.

"He never gives up. And while facing Messi in his current form is a daunting task, the one thing you can be sure of with Pat is that he will not be overawed."

Evra won the competition with United in 2008 and has been a losing finalist on three occasions - missing out in 2004 with Monaco, and in 2009 and 2011 with the Red Devils.
