Chris Waddle questions Chelsea style after Basel loss

Following Chelsea's 2-1 Champions League loss at home to Basel, Chris Waddle says that the Blues need to become less rigid.

Former England international Chris Waddle believes that Chelsea's style of play is restricting the creative ability of their players.

Chelsea lost 2-1 at home to Basel in the Champions League and came away from Goodison Park without a point at the weekend after losing 1-0 to Everton.

Speaking after the Blues' loss at Stamford Bridge, Waddle said that manager Jose Mourinho needs to allow his side to express more freedom on the ball.

"When Mourinho was winning trophies at Chelsea last time around, he knew how to get results," Waddle told BBC Radio 5 Live. "But I think the game's changed. Players like [Eden] Hazard and Oscar need to be released to go and play, go and hurt teams.

"I've watched them this season and they seem a little rigid. It's like they're in a straitjacket. You don't see [Cristiano] Ronaldo or [Lionel] Messi tracking back.

"I can't believe [Juan] Mata can't get into the team because he's a man who can open doors."

Chelsea's next European game sees them travel to Steaua Bucuresti on October 1.
