Holders Chelsea have been knocked out of the Champions League despite a 6-1 victory over Nordsjaelland at Stamford Bridge.

A 1-0 win for Juventus at Shakhtar Donetsk means that the Blues will join the knockout stages of the Europa League after becoming the first defending champions in the competition's history to not reach the last 16.

The visitors had the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot in the first half following Gary Cahill's handball, but Nicolai Stokholm saw his effort saved by Petr Cech.

Chelsea missed from the spot moments later when Eden Hazard was denied by Jensen after Mikkel Beckmann had handled.

However, the hosts were given second penalty in the 38th minute as Adu was penalised for handball, allowing David Luiz to fire the ball past Jensen.

It got better for Chelsea with seconds remaining in the half as Fernando Torres converted at the second time of asking after his initial effort had been saved.

Rafael Benitez's team took a 2-0 lead going into the second half, but they conceded just 20 seconds after the restart as Joshua John calmly headed the ball over Cech.

Chelsea's two-goal advantage was restored through Gary Cahill's thumping header before Torres tapped in his second from close range on 56 minutes.

It was 5-1 soon after as Juan Mata slotted in from six yards, while Oscar got in on the act in the 70th minute with his simple finish.
