Frank Lampard admits England failures

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard admits that his generation have underperformed for England in major international tournaments.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has admitted that his generation have not reached their potential for England at major international tournaments.

The likes of Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney were part of what was dubbed as England's 'Golden Generation', but they have failed to progress past the quarter-finals of an international tournament since Euro 1996.

Lampard has won every trophy available to him in the club game, but admits that the lack of success on the international stage is a black mark on the records of both him and his teammates.

"As a group and individually, I'll hold my hands up and say at World Cups we haven't performed," Lampard told talkSPORT.

"It certainly isn't for the want of trying. But when you look at the end and you go 'yes, I've ticked all those boxes', the international one, none of us have ticked."

Lampard recently became the greatest goalscorer in Chelsea's history by scoring his 203rd goal for the club, surpassing Bobby Tambling's record.
