Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker believes that the club should be finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season.

Gary Lineker has insisted that his former club should be targeting a Champions League place at the end of the season.

The White Hart Lane club appointed Andre Villas-Boas as Harry Redknapp's successor during the summer and Lineker has challenged the Portuguese boss to prove himself after his torrid spell at Chelsea.

Lineker told ESPN: "If Villas-Boas is the manager Tottenham believe him to be and he knows what he's doing, then he should produce a team to get the club back into the Champions League.

"It didn't work out for him at Chelsea for one reason or another, but he has been given another opportunity and we will find out about him.

"When you look at the squad he has there, Spurs have some very good players and they should be in the mix for a top four finish."

Lineker scored 80 goals in 138 appearances for Spurs between 1989 and 1992.
