Fernando Torres: 'Belief kept me going against Manchester City'

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres claims that belief was the key behind his match-winning performance against Manchester City last weekend.

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has called on the Blues to show the same belief that drove him on to score a late winner against Manchester City last weekend.

Torres missed a gilt-edged chance early on at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but kept going and was rewarded with his first Premier League goal of the season to help Chelsea go second with a 2-1 victory.

The Spaniard declared that his confidence was not shaken by the early miss, while insisting that the Blues were worthy winners as he took advantage of a late mix-up between City goalkeeper Joe Hart and defender Matija Nastasic.

He told the club's official website: "Sometimes the most important thing about a miss is to forget about it and carry on. I was really happy to create this chance for Andre Schurrle to score his goal to make it 1-0 straight after this miss.

"I used to have a teammate who told me every ball can be the most important ball of the game, and this is a clear example, a long ball and a misunderstanding and you have the ball to pass into the net.

"Belief is the key and sometimes goals are going to be great goals but sometimes goals are coming from small mistakes like this. If I didn't run for that ball I would not be able to score that goal, so the team has to show that belief from the first minute to the last every game."

The 29-year-old broke his Premier League duck with his fifth goal in 11 appearances this season in all competitions.
