Ray Wilkins unsure over Rafael Benitez appointment at Real Madrid

Former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins admits that Real Madrid's decision to sack Carlo Ancelotti and potentially replace him with Rafael Benitez is a surprise.

Former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins has admitted that he is surprised by Real Madrid's decision to sack Carlo Ancelotti and potentially replace him with Rafael Benitez.

Ancelotti was dismissed by the Spanish side on Monday, with current Napoli boss Benitez expected to take charge in his place.

Wilkins, who worked with Ancelotti during his time at Chelsea, believes that Benitez is not of the same standard as the Italian.

"We talk about toughest jobs in world football and I think that is the toughest," Wilkins told talkSPORT.

"But Benitez hasn't won a fifth of what Carlo Ancelotti has won, in terms of top honours.

"You are talking about Ancelotti leaving and bringing in someone who hasn't done a great deal with Napoli either, so it is a pretty strange world we are living in!"

Benitez has also managed Liverpool, Valencia and Chelsea during his career.
