Edinson Cavani: Five possible destinations

Sports Mole picks out five possible destinations for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani has developed a reputation as one of the most sought-after players in world football.

After leaving Palermo in 2010, the Uruguay international netted an excellent 33 goals in 47 seasons in his debut season at Stadio San Paolo.

Much was made of whether the 26-year-old could continue his hot streak in front of goal, but after scoring a further 71 goals over the following two seasons, Cavani is now regarded as one of the best strikers on the planet.

Below, Sports Mole has selected five clubs that Cavani could join in the summer.

Jose Mourinho is hoping to mark his return to Stamford Bridge by making a huge statement in the transfer market.

The Portuguese coach is reportedly attempting to ease current incumbents Fernando Torres and Demba Ba out of the exit door, so that he can finance a move for a big-name frontman.

The former Real Madrid manager looks to have been thwarted in his attempts to bring Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski to England, and that has resulted in speculation linking Cavani with a move to the Europa League winners.

While owner Roman Abramovich has made funds available to Mourinho, it remains to be seen whether he will allow "The Special One" to spend in excess of £50m on one player. If Cavani does arrive at Stamford Bridge, it will make their Premier League rivals sit up and take notice of their intent ahead of the next campaign.

2. Manchester City

After failing to defend their Premier League crown, it is a summer of change at Manchester City.

Roberto Mancini has been ousted as the club's coach and replaced by Manuel Pellegrini, and the club have already made two acquisitions in Fernandinho and Jesus Navas.

However, forward Carlos Tevez has departed for Juventus, and that could free up space for a move for Cavani.

Sevilla striker Alvaro Negrado is the current name being linked as Tevez's replacement, but that deal is unlikely to capture the imagination of City's supporters as much as it would if Cavani arrived at the Etihad Stadium.

3. Paris Saint-Germain

After an influx of signings at the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain secured their first Ligue 1 title in 19 years last season.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has departed for Real Madrid, but that has not stalled the French club's quest for European dominance after attracting France coach Laurent Blanc to the nation's capital.

While they comfortably achieved domestic success last season, they could only reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, which has lead to PSG's pursuit for Cavani.

They have the funds to sign the striker, and after already reportedly meeting the player's agent, they have every chance of purchasing the 26-year-old.

4. Monaco

After being bought by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, Monaco earned promotion back to Ligue 1 in May.

That has sparked an enormous outlay in transfer fees on world-class players, including striker Radamel Falcao and midfielder Joao Moutinho.

It appears that there is no limit in what Monaco are prepared to spend to acquire new players this season, and the prospect of partnering Falcao with Cavani is a mouth-watering thought.

Claudio Ranieri's outfit can't offer the Napoli forward the opportunity of European football next season, but if we were to move to the Stade Louis II Stadium, if would surely only be a matter of time before they were gracing the Champions League.

5. Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has only recently been installed as the club's new coach, but he will be wasting no time in making his presence felt at the Santiago Bernabeu.

With Gonzalo Higuain expected to depart for Arsenal in the near future, the Italian manager will be targeting a significant replacement, and there are not many better replacements than Cavani.

Ancelotti will already have Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzama at his disposal, but after Neymar's arrival at rivals Barcelona, the former Chelsea boss knows that he needs to compete with the Catalan giants.

There's a possibility that Cavani might not fancy a move to Spain with the competition already present at Madrid, but it looks likely that Napoli will be hearing off Los Galacticos.
