National League roundup: Cheltenham Town extend lead

Sports Mole rounds up Saturday afternoon's action in the National League as Cheltenham Town go four points clear at the top of the table.

Cheltenham Town have moved four points clear at the top of the National League table with a 3-1 victory over Chester FC.

Two goals from Billy Waters and a late Danny Wright strike secured the win for the home side, who capitalised on Forest Green Rovers not playing on Saturday afternoon.

Dover Athletic are third after a 5-2 success over Aldershot Town, with Stefan Payne and a double from Sean Raggett proving decisive after Town had fought back from two goals behind.

Wrexham complete the top five after Mark Carrington netted 12 minutes from time to earn the Welsh outfit a 1-0 win away at Torquay United.

Braintree Town sit just outside of the playoffs after they overturned a deficit to beat Tranmere Rovers by a 2-1 scoreline, while Lincoln City are behind on goal difference after they slipped up away at Woking, who had Dan Holman to thank after he scored twice in a 3-1 triumph.

At the other end of the table, Kidderminster Harriers are bottom after they conceded a last-minute goal to Gateshead, but Southport have moved closer to safety after Louis Almond scored either side of half time to help his team to a 3-1 victory against Macclesfield Town.

In the other game of the day, Samuel Walker scored six minutes from time to earn struggling Halifax Town a 1-1 draw at home to Guiseley.

Results in full (half-time scores in brackets): Cheltenham Town 3-1 Chester FC (1-1), Dover Athletic 5-2 Aldershot Town (2-0), Halifax Town 1-1 Guiseley (0-0), Kidderminster Harriers 0-1 Gateshead (0-0), Southport 3-1 Macclesfield Town (1-1), Torquay United 0-1 Wrexham (0-0), Tranmere Rovers 1-2 Braintree Town (1-2), Woking 3-1 Lincoln City (2-0)
