Preview: AFC Wimbledon vs. Cheltenham Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League Two clash between AFC Wimbledon and Cheltenham Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Promotion hopefuls AFC Wimbledon will be bidding to make it back-to-back wins in League Two when they continue their campaign with a home fixture against Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night.

The Dons, who are fourth in the League Two table, will enter the match off the back of a 2-0 victory over Notts County, while 14th-placed Cheltenham suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colchester United on Saturday afternoon.

AFC Wimbledon have a record of 17 wins, nine draws and nine defeats from their 35 league matches this season, with a total of 60 points leaving them in fourth spot in the table, only two points behind third-placed Doncaster Rovers.

The Dons are far from comfortable inside the playoffs, sitting just four points ahead of eighth-placed Grimsby Town, but they managed to end a poor run of form with a 2-0 success over Notts County on Saturday.

Johnnie Jackson's side had only picked up two points from their four league matches ahead of their clash with Notts County, but they secured all three points courtesy of goals from Joe Lewis and Alistair Smith.

AFC Wimbledon have the third-best home record in League Two this season, picking up 39 points from 18 matches, and they will be welcoming a Cheltenham outfit that have managed just three victories from 16 away league games in 2024-25.

The Dons recorded a 1-0 victory over Cheltenham in the reverse match earlier this season, and they have only been beaten in one of their last eight matches with Tuesday's opponents in all competitions.

Cheltenham were relegated from League One last season, but they are not in a position to challenge for a return to the third tier this term, with a disappointing campaign leaving them in 14th spot in the table.

It is not impossible for them to make the playoffs, but they are 10 points behind seventh-placed Crewe Alexandra, so a lot would have to happen in the coming weeks for the Robins to move close to the top seven.

Michael Flynn's side will enter this match off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Colchester, and they have only managed to claim two points from their last four matches in League Two, with their last success coming on February 22.

Cheltenham did beat AFC Wimbledon on home soil in March 2022, but they have not managed to overcome the Dons on their travels since October 2012, which is an indication of the size of their task in this match.

Team News

AFC Wimbledon have not reported any fresh concerns from their contest with Notts County on Saturday afternoon.

Matty Stevens has been in outstanding form for the team during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring 20 times in 43 appearances in all competitions, and there will be a spot in the final third of the field for the 27-year-old.

James Tilley is another important player for AFC Wimbledon, scoring five times from a wide area, and he will also be in the XI, while the same can also be said for experienced attacker Omar Bugiel.

As for Cheltenham, Arkell Jude-Boyd will be missing with the injury that forced him off early on against Colchester on Saturday.

Darragh Power should be the player to benefit from Jude-Boyd's absence, with a straight swap expected at right-back.

George Miller has been in strong form this season, finding the back of the net on nine occasions, and the 26-year-old will again lead the Cheltenham line in Tuesday night's league fixture, while Liam Kinsella will feature in midfield.

AFC Wimbledon possible starting lineup:
Goodman; Ogundere, Lewis, Hutchinson; Neufville, Smith, Reeves, Browne, Tilley; Stevens, Bugiel

Cheltenham Town possible starting lineup:
Day; Power, Stubbs, Bradbury, Adedokun; Kinsella, Young; Thomas, Archer, Williams; Miller
