Preview: Chesterfield vs. Bromley - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League Two clash between Chesterfield and Bromley, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two sides dreaming of a spot in the League Two playoffs will clash when Chesterfield take on Bromley at the SMH Group Stadium on Tuesday.

The Spireites will be looking to make it three consecutive games without defeat, while the Ravens will be hoping to build on their draw with Notts County last time out.

Paul Cook's Chesterfield may have avoided defeat by drawing their last two games in League Two, but they are still waiting for their first win of 2025.

Their current six-match winless run features four losses to go with those draws, and extends back to before Christmas when they beat AFC Wimbledon 1-0 at home.

After picking up just two points this year, the Spireites are now 10th in the fourth tier, eight points behind seventh-placed Bradford City in the last playoff spot.

With 20 games left to play, Cook's side will need to get back to winning ways if they are to make up ground on their rivals, and will certainly need to do better than last time out when they conceded after just 2 minutes in a 1-1 draw with 10-man Port Vale.

That being said, Chesterfield have only been outscored by Notts County and top-of-the-table Walsall this season, and should they rediscover their attacking potential in the second part of the season, the playoffs could still be within reach.

Meanwhile, Andy Woodman's Bromley have also endured a difficult start to the year, and while they did win their first match in 2025, they have since lost three and drawn just one of their last four.

However, the Ravens have at least fared somewhat better than Chesterfield since Christmas, having won two, drawn two and lost two of their six most recent games across all competitions.

Bromley are now 11th in League Two - one point and one place below their hosts – and could climb as high as ninth with victory in midweek should results elsewhere prove favourable.

In their most recent outing, attacking midfielder Cameron Congreve's trickery in the box earned Woodman's side a point when they came from behind to draw on the road against promotion-chasing Notts County.

Including that stalemate, Tuesday's visitors have lost just one of their last nine away matches in the league, drawing four and winning four in that stretch, and this should give them a quiet confidence ahead of their trip to Chesterfield.

Team News

Will Grigg in action for Chesterfield on July 20, 2024© Imago

Chesterfield are still without striker Will Grigg, who has not featured at all in 2025, so expect Aribim Pepple to lead the line once again on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, centre-back Chey Dunkley has been out since October, and as he works his way back, Jamie Grimes and Kyle McFadzean will be protecting Max Thompson between the sticks.

As for Bromley, top scorer Michael Cheek should start up top, supported by Cameron Congreve and Corey Whitely.

Tasked by manager Woodman with holding out against League Two's third-best offence, Omar Sowunmi, Byron Webster and Deji Elerewe will line up in front of goalkeeper Grant Smith this week.

Chesterfield possible starting lineup:
Thompson; Donacien, McFadzean, Grimes, Sparkes; Naylor, Oldaker; Colclough, Mandeville, Dobra; Pepple

Bromley possible starting lineup:
Smith; Sowunmi, Webster, Elerewe; Imray, Arthurs, Thompson, Odutayo; Congreve, Cheek, Whitely

We say: Chesterfield 1-1 Bromley

Neither side have started 2025 in strong fashion, and they will both be keen to put points on the board to avoid falling further behind the playoff spots.

Expect a close-fought contest that is likely to end in a score draw, especially given the hosts' goalscoring credentials and the visitors' away record.
