Coventry City cruise to victory over Carlisle United

Coventry City register back-to-back victories in League One following a 4-0 win over Carlisle United at Brunton Park on Saturday.

Coventry City have recorded back-to-back victories in League One after cruising to a 4-0 win over Carlisle United at Brunton Park.

The Sky Blues raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes courtesy of goals from Leon Clarke and Franck Moussa.

Midfielder James Berrett spurned the chance to halve the deficit for the hosts after seeing his penalty saved by Joe Murphy, which the visitors soon punished with another strike from Charlie Daniels, before Clarke added his second midway through the second half.

The Cumbrians have lost their previous two games by a four-goal margin, and Steven Pressley's men made inroads toward maintaining the status quo for the hosts, with Clarke smashing home after three minutes before Moussa dinked his shot over Mark Gillespie to double the advantage three minutes later.

Carlisle boss Greg Abbott then watched his side squander an opportunity to halve the deficit moments later, as midfielder James Berrett saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Joe Murphy.

It would not be long before the 24-year-old would rue the miss from 12 yards, as Daniels then added a third on the half-hour mark, tapping home from close range after Callum Wilson put it on a plate for his teammate.

Clarke secured his double midway through the second half, capitalising on a defensive error before clipping over Gillespie to put the result beyond doubt.

The hosts were denied a consolation by the woodwork soon after, with defender Brad Potts striking the outside of the post from distance late on.

The Sky Blues, who began the season with a 10-point deduction after the club went into administration in March, have continued to minimise that sanction and Pressley's men march toward a neutral points-tally in League One.
