Yannick Bolasie netted the goal in the 13th minute when he rounded goalkeeper Adam Legzdins before firing into the roof of the net.
The hosts responded well as Jamie Ward's effort was pushed around the post by Julian Speroni, while Chris Martin shot wide.
Speroni was called into action again on 32 minutes with a save from Craig Bryson and he kept his side in the lead again soon after when he denied Martin for a second time.
