The hosts did a good job of not allowing Bayer to play, with the first half-chance coming in the 11th minute for Sebastian Boenisch, who shot wide from the edge of the box.
Bayer continued to press and both Robbie Kruse and Jens Hegeler tested the palms of Daniel Davari in the home goal.
Ken Reichel almost found the net from a speculative shot from range, but his strike went just over the bar with Bernd Leno scrambling.
In the second half Bayer looked to be the team most likely to score as Simon Rolfes headed wide when well placed from a Sidney Sam free kick.
However, it was the hosts who stuck the killer blow as Kumbela finished low from close range, before Lars Bender was sent off late on.
