Wayne Rooney and Fabio Capello will write to UEFA as a defence tool regarding the striker's recent red card.

Wayne Rooney is expected to write to UEFA as a tool of defence regarding the red card he received during England's 2-2 draw with Montenegro on Friday evening.

The 25-year-old faces a ban at Euro 2012 for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic, but a written statement is being sent in the hope of reducing the potential punishment.

The deadline for submitting Rooney's case is tomorrow morning, while a verdict is expected to be reached on Thursday.

Rooney will definitely serve a one-match suspension and the Football Association have confirmed that they will appeal should the decision extend that ban further.

Manager Fabio Capello is also believed to be writing to Europe's governing body in an attempt to fight Rooney's corner.
