The FA will try to convince UEFA that Wayne Rooney should only serve a one-match ban for his red card against Montenegro on Friday.

The Football Association are to issue a plea to UEFA urging them not increase Wayne Rooney's ban after his red card against Montenegro on Friday, according to The Mirror.

The striker was shown a straight red card for kicking out at an opponent during England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro, and will now serve a minimum one-match ban at next year's European Championships.

However, the suspension could be increased by UEFA's disciplinary commission, but the FA are reportedly willing to provide any evidence which may help the Manchester United player's cause as well as attend any disciplinary hearing.

Rooney's dismissal came the day after his father was bailed after being arrested on suspicion of being involved in a betting scam. England manager Fabio Capello said after the match that off-field events had no bearing on the striker's mindset going into the game.
