Wolfgang Stark: 'Wayne Rooney's reaction could help'

Wayne Rooney's acceptance of the red card he received on Friday could work in his favour, according to the referee that made the decision.

The referee that handed Wayne Rooney his marching orders on Friday evening believes that the England striker's reaction to the decision could work in his favour when UEFA decide on the length of his suspension.

Wolfgang Stark dismissed Rooney for kicking Montenegro centre-back Miodrag Dzudovic during Friday's 2-2 Euro 2012 qualifying draw.

Rooney is certain to miss the opening match of the Championships next year, but depending on how the governing body view the situation, his ban could be extended to three matches.

However, the German official has claimed that the 25-year-old's acceptance of the judgement could be looked upon favourably.

"He accepted it without dissent. Maybe it will help Rooney the way he acted by accepting my decision," Stark was quoted in a number of national newspapers as saying.

"It was a straight red card. I had no hesitation. You saw what happened and Rooney knew by his reaction. He just walked off.

"I have no more input into the process. I will submit my report and it is up to Uefa what they will do."

Russia's Andrey Arshavin received a two-game suspension for a similar incident before Euro 2008.
