Paul Scholes has admitted that he fears England are becoming a side on the same level as Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
Plenty of criticism has been aimed at Roy Hodgson's squad following their group stage exit at the World Cup, and Scholes has dismissed suggestions from Football Association chairman Greg Dyke that the side will be in a good position to win the tournament in 2022.
"From what I've seen at this World Cup, we'll be lucky to qualify," the former England midfielder revealed in his Paddy Power blog. "I fear England are going the way of the Republic of Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
"England can take some positives. Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and Ross Barkley, even though he didn't start the first two games, are a sign of the future - fast, intelligent footballers. But otherwise I'm struggling."
England's exit from the World Cup was the earliest they've been knocked out of the tournament since 1958.
