Davor Suker: "England will profit from winter World Cup"

Davor Suker claims that England may benefit from a winter World Cup as they haven't performed well in a summer one since 1966.

Former international footballer Davor Suker has claimed that FIFA's decision to stage the 2022 Qatar World Cup in winter may actually benefit England.

Suker joked that England haven't done well in a World Cup since 1966, and that countries should not be too concerned with changes in their domestic calendars.

"Winter World Cup in Qatar?" he told Goal.com. "First of all, take a look at who gave their votes to Qatar - many things are more clear when you know that. Now we have to find a way to compensate that.

"The Spanish and English leagues are hit the most because they don't have winter break. It shouldn't be a big deal, especially for other countries in Europe, to reschedule domestic leagues.

"Maybe England will profit of that because, in summer World Cups, they have failed to impress since 1966! I look at this in a positive way: clubs will get compensation from Fifa because players will have no winter break, the World Cup itself could be a big show, a great tournament, and Qatar is willing to invest in football and tourism."

FIFA has confirmed that the tournament has moved from summer to winter, with the final taking place on December 18.
